Katha of

Shree Dariyalal Dev

In the 11th century AD, the existence of Hinduism was under a grave threat. At that time, a Yavana king ruled in the cities of Sindh. Hinduism was being systematically destroyed. The Hindu population was troubled and harassed. As a last resort, all the Hindu people gathered on the seashore and prayed with heavy hearts for divine help. While they were absorbed in prayer, Lord Vishnu made a divine proclamation: “O devotees, do not fear, do not be disturbed, I will incarnate as Sagardev (Amarlal) in Nasharpur.” Hearing this divine message, everyone was overjoyed.

On the auspicious day of Friday, Chaitra Sud Bij of Samvat 1107, Shri Daryalal was born to Shri Ratanrai Thakkar and his religious wife, Smt. Devkiji, residents of Nasharpur. Everyone was overwhelmed with emotion upon seeing this extremely divine child. An atmosphere of enthusiasm prevailed everywhere.

When the evil Yavana king heard this news, he immediately ordered his minister to capture the child and present him. The minister set out to capture the child. While passing by the seashore, he witnessed a miracle. He saw a radiant man riding a horse from the middle of the vast ocean, advancing with majesty as if walking on land. He was accompanied by an army. He asked, “O man, who are you?” The divine man replied in a thunderous voice that could pierce the sky: “I have come to destroy the unrighteous. If you wish to be saved, seek refuge in Amarlal in Nasharpur!” Hearing this, the minister surrendered. The minister took this message to the king. The king was furious and prepared to fight with his army when a tremendous crash, illuminating the universe, occurred, and the divine man appeared in the court. The king and his assembly were stunned by this miracle and accepted the divine man’s command.

Amarlal-Jhulelal had memorized all four Vedas by the age of fourteen. He had performed many miracles even in his childhood. He had two other brothers named Somo and Bhedo, who pursued different professions for their livelihood. Shri Amarlal himself remained a lifelong celibate. Once, his two brothers and a devout devotee named Sant Pugar called him and Amarlal gave them a discourse on philosophy, which had no effect on his brothers but opened the heart of Sant Pugar. After this, Sant Pugar stayed with Shri Amarlal. To further strengthen the saint’s faith, he took him into the depths of the ocean – to Varunpuri, and showed him many supernatural powers. Amarlal gave him seven precious items: (1) Jhari (2) Agni (3) Katha (4) Mudrika (5) Dhaklawa (6) Samresh (7) Deg. After giving these items and instructing him to manage the riverine shrines, he ascended to heaven, sitting on a throne that emerged from the ocean.

A short distance from Nasharpur is the village of Jehja, where a grand memorial of Daryalal is located. A dispute arose between Hindus and Muslims there as well. Hindus claimed Daryadev as their own, while Muslims claimed Zindapir Amardev as theirs. Finally, Shri Lal appeared and said, “You are all equal to me.” However, to maintain order and reconcile both sides, he entrusted the responsibility of the miraculous wells to the Muslim Mujawars and the worship to the Pujara family of Shri Lal. Sant Pugar acted accordingly. Harmony was established between the two communities.

In the Sindh province, the king of Bakharnagari once became lustful and ordered a merchant’s daughter to be sent to his palace. The merchant prayed to Daryadev. Dada appeared, and the king surrendered, asking for the merchant’s forgiveness. He became a devotee of Daryadev and built a shrine there.

On the birth anniversary of Shri Amarlal – Chaitra Sud Bij, a huge fair is still held in Jehja, and a festival is celebrated in Nasharpur. On that day, pilgrims visit the riverine shrine to witness the Jyoti. The influence of Shri Daryalal is immense in the Sindh region.
